In the land of Ken, there reigned a dark sorcerer that trapped conventional magic.  Magic books became completely useless and scrolls lost their tongued usage.  Out of that era came a new form of mages.  They took special types of parchment and, not unlike the geomancers, used symbols to create spells.  Owing to the fact that spells books, and special inks were outlawed, the only thing they could do to create these spells were by using their own blood to write.  This is why only the truly healthy and smart folk can adapt to these conditions as there are countless symbols to memorize and theorize.

The scroll mages work with what are called “point scrolls” and each individual “point” has a name and purpose.  Though any number of points can be used starting at “three” the most common are the 10, 12, 15, and 20 point scrolls.

Scroll mages have 35 character points to spend on the following skill list.  These abilities range from 5 to 15 character points.  Any unspent points can be used on non-weapon proficiencies or saved for use later in the game.

Casting Reduction (5): This reduces the casting time of all scrolls.  In relation to battle, it reduces it by 1.  In relation to field, it reduces it by 5, 10, 20, 30 min respectively for the four scroll types (note: any higher than 20 point has no casting reduction).

Combat Bonus (10):  A mage with this ability uses a rogue THAC0 chart.

Contract Summoning (5/10/15):  For every five (5) character points, the scroll mage can create a contract with a creature (max 3).  Character points spent for level 2 and 3 can be spent later on in the character’s journeys (provided they find a fusing druid see side note 1).  In order to have any contract abilities, though, Level 1 must be spent upon character creation.

Hit Point Bonus (10): These mages use 1d6 for determining hit points rather than 1d4

Musical Fuse (10):  If the scroll mage has a musical ability, he can set his spells to activate upon a certain song.  This turns the spell into having a “verbal” requirement instead of “semantic”.

Resistance to sleep and charm (5):  This mage gains a +1 bonus to all saving throws vs. sleep and charm spells, if the spell or effect allows a saving throw.

Upgraded Armor (5):  This scroll mage can wear leather armor.

Warrior hit point bonus (5): A mage with this ability can enjoy the benefits of a high constitution score as if he were a fighter.  For example, if this mage had a Constitution score of 18, he would gain 4 bonus HP a level, rather than 2.

Weapon specialization (15): This wizard can specialize in a particular weapon.  The character point cost for gaining proficiency and then specialization must be met in addition to this cost.
